As part of the Why It Matters initiative, Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities presented a series of 8 poetry workshops from February to April 2021 with community poetry leaders from across the islands of Hawaiʻi. Fundamental to this program is the understanding that there is power in words and in the ways we communicate them. Each workshop reflects the poetry leaders who crafted them—their common thread: a commitment to community, to civic engagement, to building towards better futures that see space for difficult conversations and committed community. We invite you to read the inspiration for these workshops in this booklet.
