Maggie Messer is the GSA President at Campbell High School and serves as a strong advocate for her peers. She argues that the most important challenge facing us is “…ignorance in society. People turn their face to the world’s problems because this er are not directly affected.” The root of this challenge is that “some people are just held to a higher standard than others. People believe that because they had privilege growing up, that they were entitled to something greater than others. Heteronormativity and institutionalized racism has been embedded in today’s society so well that people can act like they don’t see it.” But we can make change. Maggie argues that we can fight for “laws that protect and establish normalizing the rise of sexuality and gender” by “protesting and taking a stand” and “by teaching children about how you can love who ever you want, no matter what.” Visit https://www.civiceducationcouncil.org/ for more videos.
